15 years ago, in geography class at secondary school, I remember laughing out loud about people in Siberia who warm their houses using a central coal-powered heating system that is without any individual control. So in winter when it's too hot inside, these people open their windows to cool down inside, resulting in more energy loss and adding more smog to the city they live in, shortening their lives 10-15 years. How stupid can people be?
Now, 15 years later, I live in an apartment with central heating in Vilnius. Outside at night it is around -15C and inside it was almost 24C. the only way to cool down is by opening the window, throwing away expensive energy, making our dear friend and neighbour Putin richer and more powerful, contributing to more smog and more climate change. Oh, and the national priority of this country is increasing the pensions of people because they can hardly pay their energy bills and building a new nuclear power plant. Both won't happen, because there is no money to pay for it. Apparently the simple solution of saving both money & energy is too simple. Can I nominate a country for the Darwin Award? In that case, the winner is ... LITHUANIA!!!
